Evan James is on the Jet Award Midseason Watch List after giving Iowa an early-season punt-return score and consistent return production. Iowa’s October 14 announcement lists the second-year receiver and return specialist at 14.7 yards per punt return on 12 returns, ranking 15th nationally at the time of the release.
The opening game supplied the standout play. James returned three punts for 108 yards against Northern Illinois, including a 77-yard touchdown—his first as a Hawkeye—in Iowa’s 40–0 win. The university says that return was tied for the seventh-longest nationally this season when the list was announced. Those rankings are an October 14 snapshot and can change as other teams play.
The award has a recent Iowa connection: former Hawkeye Kaden Wetjen won it in both 2024 and 2025. Named for Johnny Rodgers, the Jet Award recognizes college football’s top return specialist. James’s midseason inclusion puts him in the conversation; it does not mean Iowa has a third consecutive winner.
